Fireplace questions, answered

Do gas fireplaces really need cleaning?

Yes. Gas burns cleaner than wood, but venting still collects debris, gaskets and glass degrade, and termination caps corrode in coastal air. An annual service catches problems before they push combustion gases indoors.

Can you remove smoke stains from the surround?

Usually, yes. Soot on brick, stone, and marble responds well to the right cleaners applied gently. We test a small area first and never use acids on delicate stone.

My fireplace smells even when it's not burning. Why?

That's creosote and ash moistened by humid air, drafting down into the room — very common near the coast. A deep clean plus a top-sealing damper almost always solves it.
